I am in the shittiest of shit moods today [writing this well ahead of time, go me!] and none of the activities or tasks on my list are hitting, so I figured what better thing to do than write a rather mindless listicle of shit to read, shit to buy, fun shit, dumb shit, black shit, blue shit!
I guess if it’s too snarky edging towards actually bitchy I’ll try again but if you’re reading this, then it’s proof I can be in a pit of despair and still accomplish something, even if that something is inconsequential, dumb, and somewhat pointless! Woo!
whisticle listicle
we drove 2 hours last weekend to Edenton, NC for a little fam getaway in this adorable and historical hamlet on the Roanoke River. I love a road trip in which my children sleep because it’s the only time MP and I get to listen to podcasts together. This trip’s pod was called Sold A Story / apple / spotify and it was horrifying and also very good [we still have 2 episodes left but even still, very good, very horrifying lol]. About the science of learning to read and how children aren’t being taught to read, in many cases. Interesting, thought provoking, a look at how literally everything is political, and how systemic issues are everywhere affecting every aspect of life for people of color, and learning to read is no exception.
Related: this is the house on airbnb where we stayed. It was great for families but also would be really cute for almost any combination of people looking for something very chill, kids or no kids. There was a pool (not heated, so only good in summer I guess), comfy beds and sofas, super stocked kitchen, and walking distance to kayaks, boat tour, trolley tour, restaurants, and shops on the main street. It’s harder for me to enjoy, blindly, these “adorable historic” towns because lots of the history is steeped in racism, or only “great” because of slavery which largely goes unacknowledged. Edenton still boasts a memorial to their confederate dead, so there’s that. Towns like this are very cute but still very inequitable and it’s really obvious when you visit. AM I SELLING IT OR WHAT. It was fun and it is a very quaint place and was a fun time, but I can’t leave it unsaid I guess. It’s cute. AND.
I guess I’m doing a lot of educating myself on racism and history in the context of, lately, because this next article about pools is also racism adjacent [ok but like what isn’t racism adjacent, I think is what white people have really learned lately?!] It’s really good, and dives [heh, pool pun!] into like what it means to have a private pool, why we all want a private pool, and the very problematic history of public and community pools. An interesting read as we all embark on [whatever] girl summer! I just want to have like, alive girl summer. Can I just live? Does it have to be hot? Or grandma? Can it just be? yikes my mood is really coming out lol.
Speaking of luxury, here is a greek villa I am desperate to vacation to. Look at the pictures and weep with me!
In honor of pride month, my favorite gays on the internet released a book recently and I finally ordered one and I can’t wait to get it. Their instagram account is super fun and is what inspired me to DIY a mural in my laundry room, and the book sounds as funny as they are. Can’t wait to shock my husband’s grandma with it on my living room bookshelf.
Because I’m in such a shitty mood, this next thing is not a thing to buy or read, just a thing to do. WALKS. LOL REVOLUTIONARY. But like have y’all ever heard of going for a walk when you feel bad/sad/mad? Have you even heard about the positive affects of being outdoors? It hasn’t worked wonders on my mood today but it does work wonders in general, and I can’t wait to have a chance to go outside.
No college pic today because I’m too grumpy. Sorry / not sure anyone really cares?! I was a normal white chick wearing jeans and a going-out-top in dark bars with stamps and/or Xs on my hands. Only different thing about me was my hair was always garbage by the end of a humid night in Blacksburg, Virginia. Girls on bama rush tok would never.
I’m gonna stop there because girlfriend is IN IT today ain’t she! Here’s hoping we all have a splendid weekend, and happy father’s day I guess to all the dads out there who probably aren’t reading this. Don’t worry, I am preparing a very snarky memoir on father’s day including a rant about how everything for dads is superhero themed and how much I hate it haha can’t wait to share it with you.
kbye!
